This light-weight little topper is made from a jacket pattern. It’s an easy addition to your holiday wardrobe.

Reinterpret an old standby.

The Zip Front Jacket pattern is one of our earlier styles, originally designed to be an outerwear garment. Over time, we re-interpreted and hacked the pattern for many great looks.

It’s easy to pare down this pattern and quickly dress it up for the holidays.

Choose a simple pattern.

The secret to a successful hack is a simple pattern. The Zip Front Jacket is a FAST jacket to cut and sew. It has straight lines and no-fuss kimono sleeves. View A has only 5 pattern pieces. Cut it with sleeve attached to the body and eliminate armhole fuss.

Interface.

Spend a little time on this step. You’ll thank yourself for it. Interfacing makes the difference between a cheap garment and one that is high quality.

Give your jacket resilience and a nice hang by applying interfacing to facings, pockets, hems and the back shoulder seam of your jacket pieces.

Eliminate the tough stuff.

Speed up your project by eliminating unneeded options.

For this quick topper, we did not want a lining or zipper.

If you choose fabric with a slippery back, you can eliminate the lining.

Complete the sewing instructions for front and back body pieces.

Eliminate the steps for applying zipper and lining.

Sew front and back facings together then apply to the jacket.

Hem your jacket and press!
